In children, hearing loss can be confused with a learning disability when, in fact, the child might not be hearing clearly what the teacher is saying.
The earlier a hearing loss is detected in infants the better the outcome for language and speech development.
Signs of hearing loss in infants
Aged 3-4 months child cannot identify source of sound.
Aged 1 year child cannot utter single words.
Signs of hearing loss in children
Delayed speech
Unclear speech
Does not follow directions, which is sometimes mistaken for not paying attention or just ignoring, but could be the result of a partial or complete hearing loss
Often says, "Huh?"
Turns the TV volume up too high

NDIS funding for a Hearing Disability
Comapny's involved in NDIS Planning are aware of the issues involved in obtaining funding for a "participant" with a hearing disability.
NDIS funding does require either a 90 dB or 65 db hearing loss over pure tone average of 500Hz, 1000Hz, 2000Hz and 4000Hz. That is a significant hearing loss based on averages as per the graph below considering normal hearing sits at the 20 dB level and below.
